Review by Eliza Skinner
Kristen Stewart! I have never liked Kristen Stewart in a movie before. She’s always too boring & brooding for me to believe or care about. But cast her as Joan Jett and hardly let her talk and the kid comes alive! Of course, I secretly interpreted this to mean I am right about her lesbianosity – finally she doesn’t have to pretend to want to make out with Robert Pattinson’s filthy hair, and gets to just be her cool ambitious baby-dyke-self.

I’ll be blunt about this: I really wasn’t looking forward to this movie. I’m not the biggest fan of lip-chewing, hair-twirling Kristen Stewart, or the wide-eyed, blank face expert Dakota Fanning.

Review from Frank Wilkins
With the exception of gender, the film is your basic VH1 rags-to-riches-to-rags rock ‘n roll story, but soars under the strength of the heavyweight performances of Stewart and Fanning who do a great job channeling the power that rock music carried in the ‘70s.

Review from Clay Cane
Kristen Stewart plays Joan Jett, and she surprisingly transcends the teen melodrama of “Twilight” and manages to push out a strong, risky performance. Joan Jett is an executive producer, so I doubt she would allow Bella to ruin her on screen.

‘The Runaways’ makeup artist offers some tips

“During that time period, punk rock was just beginning,” Mathews says. “It was all about Suzi Quatro and the Ramones’ pale skin, heavy black eyeliner and hair, which was followed by ‘80s glam glitter and stripy blush. It was eccentric and over the top. Nothing was subtle.”
Mathews pored through thousands of photos and video footage of the Runaways, as well as makeup ads from the 1970s, to capture the look down to the tiniest detail. “We really delved into the research,” says Mathews, who discovered quirky cosmetic habits, including the fact that Jett and Currie each painted just one of their fingernails red.
Mathews eschewed any soft-lighted perfection when it came to getting Stewart and Fanning into character. “It was important to keep it true to life, realistic and not glossed-over Hollywood,” she says. “The Runaways were teenagers, so if we needed to add blemishes or to make them look like they had been out on the road, we did that. It wasn’t always dewy, beautiful skin. It was all about the eyes.”

Kristen & Dakota talk about getting racy in ‘The Runaways’

CNN Review: ‘Runaways’ rocks, most of the time
It’s a mystery how the intense and flamboyant Shannon (“Revolutionary Road”) continues to fly under the radar.
The same cannot be said for Kristen Stewart or Dakota Fanning. The “New Moon” stars are the right age (19 and 16 respectively), but more importantly they seem of the right time. They suck on cigarettes, party all night, and there’s not a paparazzo in sight.
Proving she’s more than just a wan face, Stewart gets Jett’s peculiar toughness. She’s like John Garfield in a hot red jumpsuit. When the band begins to splinter and Joan starts smashing furniture around the studio, it’s not about ego or bravado, it’s just the frustration of someone who loves what she does and sees it slipping away from her.

Kris & Dakota Leave ‘Runaways’ Rocking On The Screen
“The Runaways,” opening April 9, tells the true story of teenage girls from the ’70s growing up fast in the rock-and-roll lifestyle. In real life, actors Kristen Stewart and Dakota Fanning have been living as teenage girls in the ’00s growing up fast with the lifestyle of movie superstars. But if there were any urge to someday go all Billy Bob Thornton, the two claim the biopic got it out of their systems.
“We couldn’t be more [like rockers],” Stewart explained of the gig portraying Joan Jett during her early days in the hard-partying all-girl band. “This is the biggest opportunity to be a rock star.”
“Yeah, the closest I’m ever going to get is when I was performing ‘Cherry Bomb,’ ” Fanning said of the signature song for Cherie Currie, which she sings in the movie at several clubs and house parties while being pelted with trash and flipped off by the very punk-rock crowds the band attracted. “I guess that was the biggest moment of being an actor: pretending to be a rock star. That’s as close as I’m ever going to get.”
Kristen Stewart and Dakota Fanning share a smooch in their new rock ‘n’ roll movie, “The Runaways,” but Kristen said one thing got in the way – the law.
“She was 15, and I wasn’t allowed to grope her,” Kristen, 19, told Access Hollywood on Wednesday at the press junket for her new rocker film. “I’m actually not kidding, there are major restrictions that I don’t remember [from] when I was younger.
“I don’t want to give anything way. It’s a really passionate, hardcore scene,” she continued. “No, it’s just a kiss. It’s not really a big deal.”
“It’s just something that happened in their lives,” Dakota told Access of the kissing scene. “In the script, it’s not like a big build up or something that they talk about afterwards.”
